De VSD is verbonden met een internationale droomvereniging, de 'International Association for the Study of Dreams' (IASD).

Deze telt meer dan 700 leden in 20 landen. 

The International Association for the Study of Dreams is a non-profit, international, multidisciplinary organization dedicated to the pure and applied investigation of dreams and dreaming. Our purposes are to promote an awareness and appreciation of dreams in both professional and public arenas; to encourage research into the nature, function, and significance of dreaming; to advance the application of the study of dreams; and to provide a forum for the eclectic and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and information.

Als sinds haar oprichting in 1994 is VSD actief binnen de IASD. Leden van de VSD waren en zijn lid van het algemene bestuur van de IASD; op dit moment Suzanne Wiltink te Zutphen en Barbara Roukema te Soest. Harry Bosma te Kropswolde, Groningen, is vertegenwoordiger van de IASD voor de regio Nederland.

Nederlanders, zowel lid van de IASD als van de VSD, vormen het organiserende comité voor de 28e jaarlijkse conferentie van de IASD die in Nederland zal plaatsvinden 24-28 juni 2011.
